Shielding effectiveness (SE) is often treated as a straightforward ratio of fields inside and outside an enclosure. But is that really the full story? As devices shrink and become increasingly packed with components, conventional SE values can be misleading. Much like crash test dummies revolutionized vehicle safety testing, we need representative models to truly understand how enclosures behave under electromagnetic stress. This talk revisits the meaning of shielding effectiveness, highlights the critical role of enclosure contents, and introduces the concept of “SE crash-dummies” for more realistic, reproducible evaluations.
